JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) officially closed the meeting of ASEAN heads of state (of the 18th Asean Summit.) SBY also describes 10 key topics discussed by the ASEAN heads of state.
Important topics discussed by the leaders of Asean countries in 7 to May 8 include:
1. Asean connectivity. This connectivity must be realized, through a master plan and should be followed up. Included also build connectivity in their respective countries through infrastructure development, transport and people to people contact.
2. Food security and energy. Asean leaders realize there is turmoil on the world in terms of energy and food prices. The last six months there is a systematic increase. As food prices continue past the high. This directly or indirectly increase the number of poor people.
For that the leaders decided to cooperation in food. Asean must enhance and develop the agricultural food reserves, including research and development. While in the energy sector, Asean was asked to further develop renewable energy.
3. Regarding conflict management and conflict resolution, particularly regarding conflicts Thailand and Cambodia, ASEAN leaders to encourage both countries to take a peaceful solution, including preventing the escalation of conflict. Indonesia as Chairman of the ASEAN efforts to facilitate peace negotiations in order to achieve a peaceful solution, in order to realize the ASEAN Political Security Community.
4. Regional Architecture, Asean must mutually reinforce their regional architecture for the creation of regional security and peace. If the established security and peace, the economic stability can be realized.
5. The desire to be people centered association, which is not only government's cooperation, but Asean must really down to earth. Therefore, the nature of ASEAN cooperation is representing the civil community.
6. The need for continuous cooperation in handling natural disasters. Asean countries agreed to work together educational training on handling natural disasters. All ASEAN countries choose a high-power response in the face of natural disasters.
7. Asean cooperation sub-region are also discussed in this summit. Cooperation is to reduce disparities, and bring prosperity.
8. Asean also discussed the readiness to face the upcoming East Asia Summit to be held in Indonesia. This meeting is the first time attended by two new members, namely the United States and Russia. Asean to discuss agenda items brought to this forum, including the economic dialogue, political and stability in the Asean region.
9. Also discussed the membership of Timor Leste. The country formally applied for membership of ASEAN and ask for accelerated membership. Asean also discussed the certainty and readiness of East Timor and ASEAN itself.
10. Plan also discussed Myanmar and Laos who want to exchange leadership. As is known Laos would like to request the exchange to be chairman of ASEAN which was held in 2014 should be 2016. Myanmar has expressed its readiness to become chairman of Asean in 2014 to replace Laos. Basically all Asean members agreed, but everything reminds Myanmar to enhance the development of democracy in their country.
