Tokyo City is still safe (now)?

Ilustration
SINCE Fukushima nuclear crisis happened, I repeatedly got a phone call and SMS from friends and relatives in the country. The message was the same, asking me to go home. Nuclear crisis has raised fears this is extreme, both in Japan itself, as well as in the country.
Not to mention the media who constantly preach a tense atmosphere. When the radiation is said to have reached the city of Tokyo, to be honest I also covered the panic. Yesterday, reportedly began to contaminated tap water. This continues to trigger concerns.
But I am reminded of British Prime Minister Lloyd George's remark about the analogy of panic in financial markets, "financiers in panic do not make a pretty sight". In a panic we often can not think straight. Even if I go back, should clear the reasons and considerations, not because of panic, and not because the news media.
I also try to see the situation in the city of Tokyo. Almost no signs of panic in the face of the Japanese. As announced no radiation in the Tokyo City drinking water, a little there is panic. But they do activities as usual. Stay organized and in line.
I also send emails and chat with many Japanese friends. On average they were all working normally. They still invite discussion, called, and sometimes invited to lunch. There are no signs of excessive panic of the citizens of Tokyo.
Why they do not panic ?
When I asked, the answer is because the bulk of their trust in their government. The Japanese believe that the Japanese government will do my best and always think of the people. Let alone to the nuclear crisis, when the earthquake and the entire transport dead in Tokyo alone, suddenly at a station is distributed free blankets and water. Tokyo local government is considering the safety of its citizens.
As a result, the Japanese work and activities as usual. Although they are also certainly alarmed by developments that occurred, but it is not shown. Every meet, they each had a contagious fellow to rebuild Japan.
There is absolutely no panic like that portrayed in the media. I also believe with what was said by colleagues at the Japan Nuclear PhD candidate, who said that the situation is not as bad as the media reported.
The students of the nuclear, patiently explaining to me and other Indonesian colleagues on the development of nuclear reactors Fukushima. They also do updates and socialization to all citizens of Indonesia in Tokyo, including a housewife-mother, or wife of a diplomat, who often worry.
Explanation of these colleagues say that what the Japanese government is now in accordance with the procedural safeguards of nuclear reactors, because a nuclear reactor built with preparing the worst that could happen.
Fukushima nuclear reactors in operation always adhere to basic principles of management of nuclear reactors known as 3C, which means Control, Cool, and Contain. Under no circumstances, including disasters, nuclear reactors must always be in-Control. And Control function is proven to work well. This was evident when the earthquake happened, the whole reactor stop (shutdown), which reduces the risk of leakage.
Once stopped, the reactor takes step cooling (cooling). This step can actually be done automatically with an electric pump that will be watered with sea water reactor. Unfortunately, automated tools such deadly tsunami. As a result, the cooling process failed. This is what continues to be preached in the media. This is also being carried out and championed by the Japanese. They tried to cool the reactor in various ways, either doused by helicopter to the fire department.
Cooling step that requires some explosion to reduce the pressure. So the result will occur explosions as part of the cooling process. The risk is no release of radiation into the air.
Although the cooling fails, a dangerous radioactive material is still contained within the safety tube (reactor vessel). This is the third C function, or Contain earlier. Dangerous radioactive material in the reactor Fukushima, either stored in different layers of safety tube. This differs from the Chernobyl nuclear reactor that does not have a safety vessel. Chernobyl reactor is also used for military purposes, while Fukushima for generating energy. Therefore, at Chernobyl, which used different materials, different material, and also different ways of handling.
Regarding radiation that occurs, the material that is currently released in the air is kind of Cesium 137 and Iodine 131. Both are carried by air and arrived in Tokyo in the wind. But the farther from the center of this substance, he increasingly decomposed and reduced the danger. This is what makes the Japanese government made evacuation along the 30 km radius. While they say that the city of Tokyo is still safe.
On 23 March, there are Iodine-131 radiation on the Tokyo City tap water over the threshold of reasonableness. But the next day, the numbers have declined and returned to normal levels. Meanwhile, air radiation in the Tokyo area are normal and natural points, well below the normal limit of 0.274 microsievert / hour. As a comparison, if we do X ray, radiation exposure of 600 microsievert / hour, get on a plane from Tokyo to New York, are exposed to about 200 microsievert / hour.
With a variety of reasons that are very rational, I can say that the situation in Tokyo is still safe for now. The problem faced today is Tokyo's electrical energy crisis. As a result, the city of Tokyo is still paralyzed and not normal. Blackouts and electricity savings occur in many places. Public transport has not been recovered. And sometimes food is not widely available. City of Tokyo is still not excited as before.
But, apart from that, there is no reason for us to do the exodus or evacuation. Japan Society is at work, and we too must continue to work hand in hand in accordance with the duties and functions of each, and of course, continue to provide benefits for others. Hopefully the situation can be improved.
