700 Fishermen of Myanmar are Missing because hit by the storm

Ilustration
YANGON - Nearly 700 fishermen from Myanmar lost due to the storm for three days. The storm destroyed the fishing boats in the Andaman Sea.

Some fishermen who survived said they had survived for several days on a bamboo raft before the ship was saved by offshore oil companies, fishing boats Thailand, Myanmar or naval vessels.

The Weekly Eleven news journal reported as many as 15,583 fishermen rescued from a storm with winds of 70 mph on March 14 to 17. The storm destroyed the raft and fishing nets and fishermen swept out to sea. It said 682 fishermen are still missing.

The storm hit early before the rainy season and came at the shrimp fishing season. The storm came as thousands of fishermen sailed on a bamboo raft.

Myanmar authorities tend not to immediately issue a report on the effects of natural disasters and receive criticism because of slow in providing relief and humanitarian aid in previous disasters.

The Government of Myanmar has not yet announced the official number of deaths. However, the Weekly Eleven said three people were killed. While the other weekly news journal, The Voicereported 14 fishermen were killed during the storm over the weekend. The number of actual victims is estimated to be higher.

The storm hit parts of the Irrawaddy Delta, which earlier also hit by Cyclone Nargis in May 2008. Cyclone causes 130 thousand people dead.

"At least at the time of Cyclone Nargis, we have enough time, because of strong winds occurred before first light drizzle. But this time, in the middle of summer, the storm happened suddenly, "said one fisherman Kyaw Lwin told The Voice as quoted by the Associated Press on Monday (04/04/2011).

Lwin said the Thai fishermen rescued by boat after floating at seafor three days.
