BRUSSELS - NATO Anders Fogh Rassmussen Chairman expressed his regret over allied air attack that killed opposition Libya. Rassmussen called the attack as an unfortunate incident.
"This is an unfortunate incident. I am very sorry for the loss of lives in the attack, "Rassmussen said as quoted by AFP on Saturday (09/04/2011).
Rassmussen issued a statement the day after the attack that claimed the opposition had killed two opposition fighters, two medical officers, and six others missing. The attack occurred near the oil-producing town of Brega.
NATO Secretary General expressed his regret in NATO TV channel a few hours after the deputy commander of NATO operations in Libya, Rear Admiral Russell Harding from the UK, refused to apologize for the incident was an air raid.
Laksama Harding said the allies are not aware if the opposition forces using tanks to fight the Gaddafi. He also said it was difficult to distinguish the two sides on the road between the towns of Brega and Ajdabiya.
"The situation on the ground are highly uncertain. Some time ago a tank used by Gaddafi's troops to attack civilians, "Rassmussen said.
Rasmussen stressed NATO's operations in Libya in accordance with UN Security Council resolution authorizing use of force to protect civilians.
