HONG KONG - The Hong Kong government would ban women from mainland China to give birth in Hong Kong hospitals. This is done to limit the tens of thousands of Chinese pregnant women who come each year to Hong Kong.

The number of pregnant mainland Chinese women who choose to pass the border continues to rise. Until now Chinese woman who gave birth in Hong Kong starting nearly half the 88 thousand female birth rate in Hong Kong in 2010.

Government of Hong Kong feel pressured in recent weeks after the doctors have been known to help process the birth of a baby in the city, while the number of candidates for local mothers are very small.

As reported by AFP on Thursday (04/07/2011), the mothers from mainland China prefer to give birth in Hong Kong because Hong Kong Government would give their children a right to live and get an education.

Cope with these pressures, the Minister for Food and Health of Hong Kong York Chow announced the government would set a quota for mainland Chinese mothers on the basis of the available facilities, manpower and the number of requests at the city hospital.

"I think the need to control the number of pregnant women from mainland China who come to Hong Kong," said Chow. Chow estimated the number of local mothers who give birth will increase.
