Earthquake death toll of Myanmar Reached 40 People

YANGON - strong earthquake that shook Myanmar last Thursdaynight has killed more than 40 people. It is feared the death toll willcontinue to grow today after the conditions in remote areas is known.

A Myanmar government radio station broadcast, 41 people listed as dead and 48 people were injured. It is said, 244 houses, 14Buddhist monasteries, and nine government buildings damaged.

An official from the UN World Food Program says there are manycasualties and serious damage in the village of Mong Lin, 8kilometers from Tachileik. Government radio station said there were 29 victims killed in the village and 16 others injured.

Government newspaper New Light of Myanmar reported 15houses collapsed in the village Tarlay, while state radio stationsaid 11 people were killed and 29 people injured. Other UNofficials said a hospital in Tarlay partially destroyed, as well as thebridge. This further complicates access to the village.

Government newspapers also reported that two people were killedin Tachileik, including a child aged 4 years. It is said, six peoplewere injured in the city located just across the border province ofMae Sai in Chiang Rai, Thailand.

UN officials said drugs will soon be sent to quake-hit areas alongwith the assessment team that will cooperate with the Myanmar Red Cross.

UN officials testified anonymously because of the Government ofMyanmar does not like to provide information that has not passedto the media.
